Tote Betting explained in brief
Tote Betting explained in brief
The Tote way of betting is very different to betting with a traditional bookmaker. With the Tote you are betting against like-minded racing fans and bettors, rather than taking on the bookie.
When betting with the Tote you are betting into a pool. This works in a similar way to the UK National Lottery, or most lotteries, in fact. It means that all the money staked on each horse in the race is gathered into one pool, together. After the race, everyone who has backed the winner will receive a share of that pool money, which will depend on the size of their original stake.
When you bet with the Tote you can bet on a win bet as well as other types of exotic bets to enjoy, which can provide big returns for a small outlay. The most commonly used bet type is the Win bet. Simply, select the horse you think will win the race, and if it comes home first, your bet is a winner!
The simplest bet type. The aim with the Tote Win is to select the winning horse. If your selection comes first you will win a share of the prize fund.
With the Tote Place you will win a share of the prize fund if your horse is placed. The number of places that pay out depends on the number of runners and is detailed further down this page.
Select the winner and second horse in the correct order.
One step on from the Exacta, select the winner, second and third horse in the correct order. This is the Tote version of a tricast bet.
Pick two horses and if they both finish in any of the first three places you will be a winner.
Pick a horse to win in the first six races of a meeting and if they all come in first you will get a share of the Tote Jackpot pool. Jackpot Results

Tote Place
Place bets provide flexibility and allow a margin for error. Your selection doesn’t need to win, it simply needs to place in the race. Depending on the number of runners, the position it needs to finish in is:
4 or fewer runners: No place betting
Between 5 and 7 runners: The first two
More than 8 runners: The first three
Handicaps with 16 or more runners: The first four
The Tote Exacta and Tote Trifecta are similar to forecast and tricast betting provided by most sportsbooks. These bets require bettors to select the horses that will finish first and second, [the Exacta], and first, second and third [in that order], for the Trifecta. With a large range of combinations, the odds and subsequent returns can roll intothe 100’s and 1000’s per stake.
The biggest wins from Tote betting can come from Trifecta’s, if the odds of the horses palced are high. However, the super-big wins usually come from Scoop Six bets or Jackpots. The record win for an individual Scoop six winning ticket was £1.3 million!
